Howe History, Mystery, and Faith: St. James Chapel

This month, we are featuring a series of articles on Howe, Indiana, a small Northern Indiana town that deserves accolades for its charm, history, and tourism offerings.

Today’s blog focuses on the St. James Chapel, situated on the grounds of Howe Military School. This building is so stunning, it exudes beauty, mystery, and an historical holiness unlike anything else in this area.

St. James Chapel in Howe
*The ornate splendor found in the St. James Chapel, settled on the well-groomed grounds of Howe Military School, is a style unlike anything you will find in Amish Country.

Built in 1902 as a model of a Cambridge chapel in Oxford, England, the chapel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Legend has it that the regal pews lining the walls were hand-carved by a German student in exchange for his tuition.

The Chapel is steeped in rich history. Images of each bishop, and some of the school founders, including Mr. and Mrs. Howe, are enshrined with a stained glass window. Stone stairs lead under the chapel to the crypt where lay the founders of the school.

Free tours are available; please call ahead so a tour guide will be available to tell you the intriguing stories of the chapel’s enchanting history.

Tours are also available in the Howe Mansion, which is also listed on the National Historical Register.
