Chicago Comes to LaGrange

Chicago Joe’s, that is, and Joe Albergo and wife, Cheryl are flipping pizzas, hand-cutting fries, and creating hot dogs and sandwiches with many ingredients from the Windy City itself.

Chicago Joe & homemade pizza dough!
Upon visiting Chicago Joe’s at 101 Detroit Street, LaGrange, my husband and I felt like we made two new friends with Joe and his sidekick, Clinton Hackworth, self-proclaimed “wienie-ologist.”

Within ten minutes, Joe had shared where he came from—Chicago—and what he cooks—food a person might find at two well-known Chicago eateries: “Gene and Jude’s,” at one time voted #1 hot dog place in the city; and “Johnny’s” in nearby Elmwood Park.

If you don’t know what “Chicago-Style Hot Dog” means, Joe can tell you and serve you the real thing. I could relay all the special qualities I learned about the art and science of making Chicago-inspired food, but I’ll just encourage you to check out his restaurant where Joe can tell you himself. He’s a great teacher, and he’s just as colorful in his story-telling as the ingredients you’ll find on your hot dog.

Suggestion: make sure you ask about the special breads he uses—from Chicago, of course.

This self-taught restaurant owner grew up in Chicago but had extended family living in the Michiana area. After losing his job during the recession, Joe and his family moved to Royer Lake. After another job loss due to the recession, Joe had a meeting with destiny:

“I missed my Chicago food so much,” he shares, “one day I just decided to bring Chicago food to LaGrange. I’ve been working 12-hour days since 2010, but I love meeting the people and serving up great food.”

Joe has a wealth of stories about his home city, and he has the photos in the restaurant to prove his knowledge: as a matter of fact, he photographed most of the Chicago pictures himself.

The restaurant resides in a corner old building with tons of character, from the restored tin ceiling to the original hardwood floors.

It’s a wonderful family place with Vienna hot dogs, Chicago style sandwiches, amazing pizza, and “The Chicago Tamale.”

If your family is asking for something other than home-style food like roast beef and mashed potatoes, come to Chicago Joe’s.

Actually, come here first. You’ll score major points from the family.
