LaGrange County Barn Quilt Mural: 4-H Star

To celebrate the LaGrange County Barn Quilt Tour, we are devoting two blogs a month on information regarding a specific mural you will see dotting the Amish backroads in Northern Indiana.

Even though we have numbered the blogs, the order in which we present the murals isn’t terribly important, as you can begin your own self-guided tour anywhere you would like. Just stop by the Visitors Center at 350 N. Van Buren Street, Shipshewana to pick up a brochure with a map.

We hope you enjoy each blog at it provides a sneak peek into the background of each barn quilt mural and location.

Barn Quilt Mural #15: 4-H Star
4-H programs just don’t get any bigger than the Northern Indiana chapters of 4-H, and with LaGrange County being predominantly rural and agrarian, LaGrange County 4-H helps lead the way.

It only seems fitting, then, that the spirit of 4-H would be captured in a barn quilt mural, the 4-H Star. With 9 blocks outlined in green and brown, the center of the mural captures the 4-H clover emblem, and each corner is painted white, bearing the name of each of the four values: Head; Heart; Hands; and Health.

Location information:
LaGrange County 4-H Fair is situated less than five minutes outside downtown LaGrange, just off State Road 9.

This busy fairground attracts year-round guests and programs, but the best time of all is the 4-H Fair, typically held from the first through the second Thursdays in July.

According to this Purdue source, last year nearly 1,200 county youth participated in 4-H programs through traditional club and project work, events on the Purdue campus, community and classroom enrichment activities, and county-wide career development programs in collaboration with area FFA groups.
