When the MEC (Michiana Event Center) built it’s new facility in Shipshewana, the motto was Bringing BIG to Michiana, and boy, they weren’t kidding. The multi-purpose venue hosts everything from the concerts of world-class musicians to rodeos, and from enormous craft fairs to holiday spectaculars, it’s become a true destination for big events and entertainment.
The planning and construction of the building is a model of ingenuity due to its ability to change size, shape, seating, and even flooring, based on the needs of the next event. Thousands of pounds of dirt are routinely moved in for horse shows tractor pulls, and then removed again so they can set up for a concert. It’s truly a marvel.
The tenacious Karen Flanhardt is kept busy as the Director at The MEC. Her job is multi-faceted, so she does marketing, branding, and sales, as well as event planning. Read below for a quick interview about what Karen enjoys and what she is looking forward to in 2024.
Q. Do you have a favorite act or event?
A. Any of our concerts are my preferred event.
Q. What are you most excited about in the coming year?
A. Booking more events and having people from outside our 100 mile radius discover us.
Q. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
A. Spending time alone and walks in the woods.
