“Marion always said that if the Huff Corners Schoolhouse was ever for sale, she wanted to buy it.” About 3 miles east of LaGrange, you’ll pass the now-renovated Bloomfield Schoolhouse Lavender. Owens Marion and Greg Wiggins moved from Texas to LaGrange and bought the building in 2020. Their goal is to turn it into an event and gathering space for visitors.

“We didn’t hesitate to purchase it, despite not knowing what we’d do with the building!, said Marion. “We loved the lavender farms in Texas and thought we’d try our hand at an experimental plot. The plants flourished!”

The Wiggins began selling lavender products at farmer’s markets and now sell from their business and the Bloomfield Apothecary in LaGrange. “Summer 2023 we planted 800 additional plants. In 2024 we planted 3400 more plants and purchased the property at 107 E Spring in LaGrange. We began restoration on Aug 27 and restorations on the first-floor apothecary were completed in time for our soft opening on Nov 23. Our business now includes 4400 plants, Bloomfield Schoolhouse Lavender Farm, and Bloomfield Lavender Apothecary.”

The schoolhouse is part of the National Register of Historic Places. So, when you visit, you’re visiting a piece of Indiana history. You’ll find anything from lavender-scented candles, balms, tea, and bath and body products at the apothecary in downtown LaGrange. Stop by the Shipshewana/LaGrange County Visitors Center to pickup Bloomfield products as well!

You can get inside looks at the restoration process by checking out the official Bloomfield Schoolhouse Lavender Facebook or Instagram pages. Marion posts routine videos of her and her three kids twins, Annie and George, and August, at the apothecary, in the schoolhouse, and at the farm.

The people who visit are a major part of why Marion devotes time to creating videos.“I find it a quick and easy way to engage with friends and customers. We have many more planned, including some more long-form YouTube videos as well.”

The official website has details about the business and products you can buy. Once the schoolhouse is available to rent, you can do so there as well. “We always love meeting people at the apothecary. One of the things that drew us to LaGrange was the focus in building a community for children to be children. We know our kids are safe. People here are truly kind; there are no strangers in LaGrange, just friends you haven’t met yet!”
