When I travel, I love finding places that are more than just somewhere to sleep. I want accommodations that become part of the experience, and that's exactly what I found at the Skoolie Glamping Bus at Trading Post Outfitters in Mongo, Indiana.
Just a short drive from Shipshewana, this converted school bus offers the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and relaxation. It quickly became one of my favorite unique places to stay in Indiana.
A Relaxing Indiana Glamping Getaway
One of my favorite things about staying here was how peaceful everything felt. My mornings started slowly with a cup of coffee outside while listening to birds sing. Instead of rushing from one attraction to another, I found myself slowing down and enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
As evening arrived, I'd gather around the campfire and enjoy the quiet that only a campground can offer. It was exactly the kind of getaway I didn't realize I needed.
A Converted School Bus You'll Actually Want to Stay In
The Skoolie Glamping Bus is far more comfortable than I expected. Inside, it has everything needed for a relaxing stay without losing that fun camping atmosphere.
The kitchenette includes a refrigerator, sink, dishes and utensils, a coffee maker, toaster oven, and hot plate, making it easy to prepare breakfast before heading out for the day or enjoy dinner back at camp.
There's also a private bathroom with a stand-up shower and toilet, along with plenty of storage for luggage and outdoor gear.
The bus comfortably sleeps up to six people with:
- One queen bed
- One fold-out futon
- Two twin bunk beds
It's a great option for couples, families, or friends looking for a unique Indiana glamping experience.
Kayak the Beautiful Pigeon River
One of the highlights of my stay was spending time on the Pigeon River.
Trading Post Outfitters has been introducing visitors to this beautiful river since 1971, and it's easy to see why people return year after year. I rented a kayak right at the campground and spent several peaceful hours floating down the river.
The gentle current and wildlife created one of those experiences where you naturally appreciate the scenic banks as you float. It wasn't about racing to the finish. It was about soaking in the beauty of northeastern Indiana.
If you enjoy kayaking or canoeing, this is one of the best river trips in Indiana.
Spend an Evening in Shipshewana
One of the things I loved most about staying at Trading Post Outfitters is that you're close enough to enjoy everything Shipshewana has to offer.
After a relaxing day on the river, I drove over to the Blue Gate Theatre for an evening show. It's one of my favorite places to catch live entertainment, and it made the perfect ending to an already wonderful day.
You can easily spend time exploring downtown Shipshewana, browse the local shops, enjoy a great meal, then return to your campsite for a campfire before turning in for the night.
It gives you the best of both worlds, small-town entertainment and a quiet outdoor retreat.
More Than Just a Campground
While the Skoolie is certainly unique, the campground itself offers plenty to explore.
Surrounded by the Pigeon River Fish & Wildlife Area, there are opportunities to hike, watch wildlife, paddle the river, fish, or simply enjoy being outdoors. Every direction you look reminds you why northeastern Indiana is such an underrated destination for nature lovers
Planning Your Stay
The Skoolie Glamping Bus includes its own campsite with electric and water hookups, a picnic table, and a fire ring. Inside you'll find a kitchenette, private bathroom, comfortable sleeping arrangements for up to six guests, and everything you need for a memorable glamping experience.
A two-night minimum stay is required on weekends and holidays.
Pro Tip
Plan at least two full days. Spend one day kayaking the Pigeon River, then use the next to explore Shipshewana, enjoy dinner, catch a show at the Blue Gate Theatre, and finish your evening relaxing around the campfire.
It's the perfect combination of outdoor adventure and small-town charm.
