Der Ruhe Blatz Motel is noted on Trip Advisor as a fine place to rest. That’s a very good thing, because the name literally means “The Rest Place” and for the millions of visitors that come to Shipshewana each year it is a great option to stay right in the center of it all!
Der Ruhe Blatz is located along SR 5, the main road into Shipshewana. This hotel is a budget motel, meaning a pool/spa area are not provided.
However, the rooms provided are a simple and wonderful place to rest after a day of shopping, walking the Shipshewana Flea Market, or enjoying the Amish backroads.
The furniture in the rooms were built by local Amish families. The beds are a nice size, and the rooms also have a small refrigerator and microwave.
Rooms & Layout
You can choose from 30 rooms whose exterior doors face the attractive rural surroundings. Flowers were blooming bountifully when I visited, adding to the simple beauty of Der Ruhe Blatz.
The front of the motel contains the office and the continental breakfast area. You can make homemade waffles on the spot, and other items are also available. The coffee was fresh and tasty.
Another nice thing about the front area was it contained numerous brochures for visitors to acquaint themselves with their local surroundings. I even discovered a couple of publications about LaGrange County and Shipshewana I hadn’t seen before.
A Popular Place to Stay
The office mailbox was the most telling to me: nearly every room was booked the day I visited. One of the owners told me a full mailbox and full motel are not unusual there.
If you’re looking for a simple but clean motel offering just the place to rest, Der Ruhe Blatz just might be your place.
