Nativity Scenes are a lovely and decorative reminder of the reason for the season this time of year, and being that Shipshewana is a special place that appreciates both faith and craftsmanship, it is the best place to find the perfect Nativity Scene for you and your home. There are more options than are possible to list here, and just the three shops we are showcasing here have more options than even these.
First up is Gifted Hands Villages, a hidden gem located inside Yoder’s Red Barn Shoppes. Not only do they carry hand-made items that you can’t find anywhere else in Shipshewana, they have items from all over the world. Various colors, themes, and materials mean that these are easily the most diverse group of artistic nativity creations you’ll find in the area. Bring home a one of a kind piece carved from soapstone, or wood, or built with all-natural fibers. They even carry nativities created from Tagua nuts, which are known as Vegetable Ivory because they resemble animal ivory when carved, but without the harm to any living creatures. Next up is another wonderful shop located in Yoder’s Red Barn Shoppes, Light of Grace Bookstore. It’s called a bookstore, but it’s really so much more. You can find everything from clothing to coffee, from Bible covers to gifts of all types. The front of the store is currently stocked with beautiful Nativity Scenes, and it will be a challenge to choose a favorite. If you love elegant Nativity Scenes that have a glow all their own, you will greatly enjoy this shopping trip. Here are just a few examples. (Click on a pic to see a larger view!)
Finally, a well-known Shipshewana artisan when it comes to carved wood pieces, is Teaberry. With two locations, Teaberry is a perennial favorite with locals and visitors for not just wooden baskets, but home decor of all types, and for every season. They carry a number of different types of Nativity Scenes, including puzzle varieties, which add a bit of fun. A new addition to their Christmas selections occurred a few years ago, and now every year fans look forward to the reveal of the Annual Christmas Nativity Music Box. Teaberry’s music box Nativity plays a beautiful Christmas carol to accompany the carved art of the Holy Family.
