Mongo Melons farmstand is operated by Jim and Sandra Gick on the land that Jim’s ancestors, the Haskins and McKinleys, had been growing and selling “muskmelons” since around 1925. They learned that the granite-filled, sandy soil is very well-suited to growing muskmelons. During the Great Depression, the Haskins and the many other nearby families who grew melons started the Mongo Melon Growers Association to pool together their resources. In 1936, Gerald Haskins began growing gladiolus flowers, which continued for decades.
