Most quilters have probably heard of Shipshewana, Indiana. Fabric creations are an art form here: knitting, macrame, hand-sewn clothing, weaving, and especially quilting. Amish Quilts are beloved as decor, and so well-made that they can be handed down as family heirlooms.

It makes sense, then, that Shipshewana is also the best place to buy fabric and quilting supplies. In the Shipshewana area alone, you’ll find eight different shops, as well as shops in Topeka, Wolcottville, Middlebury, Ligonier, and Goshen.

The Shipshewana Visitor’s Center has gathered all this info and more, into a handy brochure! It has all the info you need, to see and shop for quilts and quilting supplies. It’s the perfect resource for quilt and quilting-lovers everywhere. You’ll find addresses, phone numbers, web sites (if they have one.)  As well as a legend explaining which shops are handicapped accessible, which are Amish-run, which sell quilts, and whether they take cash only, credit, or both.

Some examples:

  • Yoder’s Department Store boasts 12,000 bolts of fabric, and offers quilt and craft groups Meet & Greets, Surprise Gifts, Demos, and Special Sales.
  • Lolly’s Fabrics offers 5,000 bolts of fabric, and will share the story of a quilted wall-hanging of the Last Supper produced by a local 2nd-grade class that was crafted from 17,000 fabric pieces.
  • Local Amish homes will sometimes host Quilt Trunks Shows after meals that feature historical quilts dating from the 1800s to today.
  • NEW Amish rug weavers in Topeka welcome groups into their home workspace and will demonstrate how they make their products by hand on their old-fashioned giant wooden looms.
  • There are over 10 other quilt, fabric, and fiber shops available for additional shopping stops.
